The Endoscopy Procedure: What to Expect

Endoscopy is a common, minimally invasive procedure used by gastroenterologists to examine the inside of the digestive tract. It helps diagnose and sometimes treat conditions affecting areas such as the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, and rectum.

What Happens During the Procedure

The procedure involves the use of a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope, which has a camera and light at its tip. Depending on the area being examined, the endoscope is inserted through the mouth (for an upper endoscopy) or rectum (for a colonoscopy). Patients are typically given a sedative to help them relax and remain comfortable throughout.

Once inserted, the endoscope transmits real-time images to a monitor, allowing the doctor to carefully inspect the lining of the digestive tract. During the procedure, the doctor may:

  • Take tissue samples (biopsies)
  • Remove polyps or abnormal growths
  • Treat bleeding or widen narrowed areas

The entire process usually takes 15 to 45 minutes, and most patients are able to return home the same day.

Before and After the Procedure

Preparation is key. For an upper endoscopy, patients are asked to fast for several hours beforehand. For a colonoscopy, a bowel cleansing routine is required the day before to ensure clear visibility.

After the procedure, patients are observed for a short time while the sedative wears off. It’s normal to feel a bit drowsy, bloated, or to have a mild sore throat (in the case of an upper endoscopy). These symptoms typically resolve quickly.

Is Endoscopy Safe?

Endoscopy is considered very safe, with complications being rare. Possible, though uncommon, risks include bleeding, infection, or a small tear in the lining of the digestive tract. Your doctor will explain these risks before the procedure and answer any questions you may have.
