Conditions Treated in Gastroenterology (Digestive Health)

Conditions Treated in Gastroenterology (Digestive Health):

  1. Acid Reflux / GERD:
Acid reflux happens when stomach acid moves into the food pipe (esophagus). This can cause a burning feeling in your chest (heartburn) and, over time, can damage the lining of the esophagus. GERD is a long-term form of acid reflux.

  2. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS):
IBS is a common condition that affects the large intestine. It causes problems like stomach cramps, bloating, and changes in bowel movements (such as diarrhea or constipation). IBS doesn’t cause permanent damage but can affect daily life.

  3. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD):
IBD includes two main conditions: Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Both cause inflammation in different parts of the digestive tract. Symptoms include stomach pain, diarrhea, and weight loss. These diseases can cause long-term damage to the intestines.

  4. Celiac Disease:
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder where the body has an unhealthy reaction to gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye). Eating gluten can damage the small intestine and prevent it from absorbing important nutrients from food, leading to malnutrition.

  5. Liver Diseases:
The liver can be affected by various conditions, including Hepatitis (inflammation of the liver), Cirrhosis (liver scarring), and Fatty Liver Disease (fat buildup in the liver). These conditions can affect the liver's ability to filter toxins and perform its other important functions.

  6. Peptic Ulcers:
Peptic ulcers are painful sores that form on the lining of the stomach or the small intestine. They are often caused by infections from bacteria (like H. pylori) or the long-term use of pain-relieving drugs (such as aspirin and ibuprofen). Symptoms include stomach pain and nausea.

  7. Gallstones:
Gallstones are hard, pebble-like particles that form in the gallbladder, a small organ near the liver. These stones can block the flow of bile, a digestive fluid, causing pain in the upper abdomen and, in some cases, leading to further complications.

  8. Gastrointestinal Cancer:
Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers affect parts of the digestive system, such as the stomach, liver, pancreas, colon, rectum, and esophagus. Symptoms can vary, but common signs include unexplained weight loss, stomach pain, and changes in bowel habits.
